- Brunch - Port Eliot, St Germans 26/03/06

Whilst the sun may have refused to make an appearance, the rain didn't spoil our enjoyment of a fascinating culinary trip back in time. Hosted by Lord and Lady St Germans at their home, Port Eliot which nestles in a beautiful corner of the county, Slow Food Cornwall recreated a Country House breakfast circa 1870.

Inspired by a passage in the cookery book Good Things in England www.persephonebooks.co.uk, which recalls a Country House Breakfast at Port Eliot, we recreated a feast of English and Cornish specialities including Cornish Porter Cake; Plymouth baked onions and cheese, raised game pies and savoury eggs. Of course there was also splits and still room preserves and bowls of clotted cream. Wild food from the Slow Food Cornwall Wild Food Walk the day before with expert Marcus Harrison, gave an added twist and brunchers enjoyed steamed wild greens and wild garlic, breadcrumb, tomato and cornish cheese bake.

Organic South West's sponsorship of the event in the form of the food, enabled us to source local organic produce from some of the county's most authentic and passionate small producers; chickens from Stephen Gelly Farm; ham and bacon from Rosevinnick Farm; beautiful vegetables from Cusgarne farm and rich clotted cream and organic milk from Barwick farm contributed to a stunning selection of brunch food.

A detailed menu and recipe cards were available to give Brunchers the inspiration to take up the culinary cudgels at home. The recipes are also published here for anyone who couldn't make it but wants to have a go at home. The Beetroot and brandy pancakes are highly recommended.

Here's some of the feed back we received:

"The effort you put into making it a great day for all who attended, was obvious... the setting was great and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to visit Port Eliot... though interesting and enjoyable , I am quite glad not to be Landed Gentry living circa 1870 as I suspect I would be somewhat balloon-shaped!"
Gill Jenkins, member

"It was a most excellent and relaxing event"
Ashley Woods, Food from Cornwall

"We loved having you here and the whole thing was just great".
Cathy St Germans, Port Eliot
