VISIT NEWLYN FISH MARKET
17TH MARCH 2007

Meet at 6.45am at the entrance to the big carpark past the fish market

"So what can you expect if you visit Newlyn Fish Market at 7.00am in February? Well, it will still be dark and no doubt cold. If the weather and tide are right there will be good quantities of fish to be sold at the auction.

Newlyn lands around £15m worth each year. You will see groups of men huddling around boxes of fish whilst one of them shouts out prices and attempts to get a response. There could be up to forty different species of fish, from the size of your hand to the length of your leg. The colours ranging from metallic blue through to bronze, from green to yellow and red.

This is where the last of the food hunters are displaying their wares; the only naturally organic food left; neither cross bred, cross fertilised nor "farmed". You may see some of the fishermen quietly observing the sale from the edge of the market and some may still be landing their catches but either way, in less than an hour it will all be over.

We will then walk the 50 yards to the Fishermen’s Mission for a good hearty breakfast and afterwards, in the daylight, we may go down to the quay to view the boats or explore the original locations of some of the Newlyn School paintings.

Fishing is very weather dependant and there is a chance that little or no fish are landed. We will inform everyone by Friday 5.00 pm if there is not gong to be a market- so make sure you leave a contact phone suitable so we are able to contact you on Friday afternoon.

Stout shoes and warm coats are strongly recommended.”
